We've been teaching our son how to play Memory (he calls it "The Match Game") for the past 2 weeks, and it's been interesting to watch how his game playing skills have been improving. We have a deck of Thomas the Train cards that he loves to play with, and thanks to him I know all the names of the various trains now.
In the beginning, when we played the first couple of days, he would keep choosing the same cards over and over again ("No honey, choose a different card than the Thomas"). Now he's figured out that he can get more matches if he doesn't do that. However, we're still working on the whole "My turn, your turn" concept, which is kind of lost on him. He's got a great memory and when he sits down and concentrates, he can usually beat me. But learning how to take turns in games is a totally new idea for him. That, and the fact that he can only turn over 2 cards each time :-)
He also is a BIG fan of puzzles. My father-in-law brought him a large USA puzzle back in April, and he always takes out three states first: Texas, California, and Montana. Now, you would think he was just trying to pick out the 3 largest states in the lower 48, but he actually knows who was born there (Mommy was born in California, he was born in Texas, and Daddy was born in Montana). He also knows Michigan is where his best friend, Elias, was born. I am just amazed how good he is with puzzles. He can do parts of the US puzzle all by himself, but as it's pretty big (about 60 pieces, give or take), he still needs a little help. He has another 35 piece puzzle that he can assemble without any help from me. It's nice because when he plays with the puzzles, it gives me a little bit of time to do some things around the house.
Speaking of games, our son is asking to play Match Game again, so I'm off to play!
