The past couple of days the weather has been terrible, and our son has been anxious to try out his new bike he got for Christmas. For the first time this morning, the sky was clear, and it was a little windy, but tolerable. My husband and son went outside to play when, lo and behold, there is a big red puddle in the middle of our back porch. "What the heck is that??!!" we wondered.
First we go to the caretaker to have him clean it up, but he's not there. So we go to our landlord to ask him to help us find our caretaker. When my husband mentioned the red puddle in our backyard, our landlord calmly replied, "oh, that's just blood from the lamb they're slaughtering on the roof."
Bizarre paganistic ritual? No! It's Eid al-Adha, a holiday for the Muslims that marks when Abraham took his son to be sacrificed on the mountain (Muslims believe that this was Ishmael, as it is written in Koran, not Isaac like the Christians and Jews believe, because they believe Ishmael is the true first born of Abraham). The guys on the roof were really nice and came down to clean off our patio, but still, the idea of them slaughtering an animal on the roof seemed borderline unsanitary.
So that was (hopefully) our last adventure until we return from our trip to Copenhagen. Hope everyone has a wonderful New Year!
